A dense field of grass is an efficient way to absorb solar energy on a surface as each blade of grass exposes a large surface area by growing upright, so that even when packed closely absorbs a lot of sunlight.  The natural configuration inspired a team of polymer scientists and engineers to find a new method for creating “nanograss”, a nano-crystalline material with photovoltaic properties that harvests solar energy in an organic cell.
